Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

personalactivitymonitor
Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

This is far from the only application in this space -- alternatives such as Slife and Chrometa are full-featured and impressive -- but PAM is good option for those who want a nice, simple tracker.

Apogee rolls out Duet 2 pro audio interface for Macs

Recently drop $500 on an Apogee Duet audio interface for your Mac after pondering one for all these years? Then we're afraid we've got a bit of bad news for you, as the company has now finally rolled out a successor to the highly-desirable device. Apparently redesigned from the ground up, the new Duet 2 expectedly ditches FireWire in favor of USB, and packs some "completely redesigned" mic preamps and converters, along with two inputs and four outputs, a pair of configurable touch pads, and even an all new OLED display that replaces the basic LED meters on the original. Of course, the one thing that stays the same is the professional-level price -- look for this one to set you back $595 when it's available next month.

[Thanks, Maxwell]

Video: Adobe Shows Photoshop Concept for iPad

You’d think that after all the bickering between Apple and Adobe about banning Flash from iOS, Adobe would never want to be seen touching an iPad in public. But alas, in the video above, Adobe demonstrates its flagship product, Photoshop, working on an iPad.
The Photoshop app is just a concept, so it’s unclear whether it [...]

Opera Mobile 11 and Mini 6 released: faster, tablet interfaces, and lots more

opera mobile 11Better mobile browsing seems to be the special of the day, with the Firefox for Mobile RC landing alongside the Opera Mobile 11 and Opera Mini 6 releases. Both Mobile and Mini have had their user interfaces touched up, modernized, and enhanced for use on tablet devices. Both have also added social networking integration for fast sharing of URLs as you browse.

Opera Mobile 11 now has a faster Presto rendering engine and improved JavaScript performance, expanded HTML5 support (including the audio and video tags), and the ability to display Adobe Flash content on Android. Haptic response, smoother panning and zooming, session restore, and Web Open Font Format support have also been added.

For users who have less powerful phones or want to conserve data, Opera Mini 6 offers a full mobile browsing experience with tremendous bandwidth savings thanks to Opera's compression kung fu. Pinch-to-zoom support has been added, and Opera Mini can now pass YouTube video links to your device's built-in player. There are also better navigation controls.

Download Opera Mobile 11 or Opera Mini 6 for your phone or tablet.

Android users can also find Opera Mobile in the Market. iOS users, fear not: Opera promises an update for your Apple device is coming soon, too!

'Freight issues' delay Xperia Play/Arc on some UK networks

   Xperia Arc

Bad news for any Brits hoping to get their hands on a shiny new Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc or Xperia Play this weekend. Reports on multiple sites suggest that "freight issues" have resulted in both phones being delayed past the original April 1 release date. Vodafone and Three are now expecting to ship the handsets next week, while T-Mobile is aiming for a mid-April release. O2 has already delayed its release of the Xperia Play due to software bugs, and lists both it and the Arc as due for release sometime in April.

Pre-orders made through the Carphone Warehouse, however, will not be affected by the delays -- Carphone has confirmed that it's still expecting to hit tomorrow's launch window. [Engadget via Recombu]

Galaxy Player 5 stops by the FCC, only takes the easy tests

Galaxy Player 5 stops by the FCC, only takes the easy tests
When you only have WiFi to worry about, testing in the foam rooms of doom at the FCC gets a little bit easier. Or so we'd imagine, anyhow. Samsung's WiFi-only PMP, the Galaxy Player 5 (aka YP-G70, aka Galaxy Player 70), just got rubber-stamped by our favorite federal body, passing with flying colors. While we weren't treated to any teardown antics, we do have the lovely sketch above showing you where you can find the FCC logo. It's the thing on the pointy end of the red arrow above, a label that hopefully you'll be able to see in person very soon.

[Thanks, James]

Hello Expense is a simple, reliable expense tracker for Android

helloexpense
A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You're using it on the go, so you don't have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you're trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It's an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation - a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you're using.

The Greatest Road on Your iPhone

While we contemplate riding the 15 Top Motorcycling Roads according to the AMA membership, there’s an easier way to find great routes near where you live. For about a year now we’ve been following the progress on “The Greatest Road” iPhone application, the brainchild of Daniel Pifko, which recently got funding from SocialNav and will be taking on that name in the future. The idea behind that app is a directory of the greatest motorcycle ...

Firefox 4 now available to download, official release tomorrow

It isn't available from the official Firefox website yet, but Firefox 4 is now available to download from the Mozilla releases FTP server. Update: you can hit a random FTP mirror by using these links: Windows / Mac OS X / Linux. Update 2: Firefox 4 has now officially launched.

Despite what we reported last week, there was an unexpected (and unannounced) RC2 released on March 18. The final release build seems to have followed quickly after on Saturday, March 19. The official launch of Firefox 4 is due tomorrow.

Firefox 4 brings with it a slew of new features, including, most notably, a completely overhauled user interface that makes it look a lot like Chrome, but hardware acceleration and the jet-powered JaegerMonkey JavaScript engine also jostle for center stage. In true Mozilla style, Firefox 4 also brings support for many emerging standards, such as HTML5, CSS3 and WebGL. Finally, there are neat features like built-in Sync, restartless add-ons, and workspace management with Panorama.

For more information about Firefox 4, check our complete guide. We also have a fine selection of Firefox 4's finest restartless add-ons.

Update: Mozilla has asked us to say that this might not turn out to be the actual final build. It's still going through QA right now, and something might come up. Don't worry though: your browser will automatically update if a new build is released.

There are also some exciting goodies planned for tomorrow, and Mozilla doesn't want us to satisfy your Firefox 4 hunger just yet. Basically, if you want to enjoy the 'true Firefox 4' experience (including the pretty first-run splash screen), you should hold off installing until it's released tomorrow.

[thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
